New talent cast in Cradle

The headline-grabbing scandals of many of today's young celebrities are the inspiration for a new feature set to shoot in Alberta. Cat's Cradle, produced by Skyline Motion Pictures of Edmonton, is the story of a young, wholesome pop star named Cat who becomes a notorious pop tart.

"She's in the vein of a Christina [Aguilera] or a Britney [Spears]," explains director/producer Gilbert Allan, whose credits include several other low-budget flicks, including Halo, Winter Kill and Green Eyes.

"She turns 21 and decides she has had enough of the bubble-gum music her record label expects from her, and runs away in the middle of the night."

When her car breaks down, a handsome stranger allows her to hide out at his home and their friendship turns romantic. Unfortunately, a videographer tracks her down and takes some compromising videos of the couple that wind up on the Internet and destroy her sugary-sweet image.

Natasha Harychan (Green Eyes) penned the script for the $1.3-million film, which shoots July 3 to Aug. 11 on location in the town of Fort Saskatchewan, just outside Edmonton, and Silver Beach at Pigeon Lake.

The film stars Edmonton newcomer Cara Albo, who has a background in local theater and is also an executive producer at Skyline. Jesse Lipscombe, who is in the upcoming Samuel L. Jackson/Josh Hartnett film Resurrecting the Champ, plays her manager. No distributors are attached yet.
