Rhombus still in business
by: Oct 16, 2006 Print

Rhombus Media is as stable as ever, according to cofounder Larry Weinstein, who has backpedaled on remarks he made last month to a Toronto newspaper, in which he said his company was coming undone because of creative differences among its top executives.

Weinstein suggested the remarks were taken out of context, but did not elaborate.

"If we were going to make a decision [to split] we would do it mutually," and in a joint announcement, he says, adding that the mood at the Toronto-based production house is "amicable."

"I have a feeling we're okay," he says, citing the company's busy production slate. "We're all good."

Rumors have swirled that Rhombus is on the verge of a split over cofounder Niv Fichman's push to make big-budget international features - such as the recently wrapped Silk (see story, p. 17) - whereas Weinstein and others favor the high-minded arts documentaries on which the company has grown, including the recent Beethoven's Hair.

Fichman has not commented on the situation.

Rhombus was founded in the 1970s by Fichman, Weinstein, Sheena Macdonald and Barbara Willis Sweete.
