Cancelled Collector, Godiva's lead Leos pack
by: May 1, 2006 Print

Two newly cancelled shows could go out in a blaze of award-winning glory if The Collector and Godiva's take home even a fraction of their nominations at the eighth annual Leo Awards.

The Collector, a 10-time winner last year, is up for a whopping 21 of the West Coast film and TV awards, including best dramatic series, best directing for Larry Sugar and two noms for editing, for Daria Ellerman and Richard Schwadel.

The supernatural thriller also has a lock on the guest male performance category - taking all five nominations for Ian Tracey, Robert Kaiser, Colin Cunningham, Christopher Heyerdahl and Dhirenda - and three of the five noms for guest female, going to Tricia Helfer, Ellie Harvie and Brittney Wilson.

The Collector is also up for best writing, cinematography, sound and score, among others.

Godiva's follows with 16 nods, missing best drama but scoring directing noms for Gary Harvey and Anthony Atkins, and writing for Michael MacLennan and Abigail Kinch. Rick Tae, Matthew Currie Holmes and Neil Grayston are all up for best supporting male performance, while their coworkers Carmen Moore, Sonja Bennett and Leah Cairns dominate the noms for supporting female.

Godiva's Stephen Lebo will also face off against The Collector's Chris Kramer for best male lead, while best female will be fought out between Godiva's Erin Karpluk and Tricia Helfer of Battlestar Galactica.

Both Godiva's and The Collector were recently cancelled by CHUM. Battlestar is currently shooting its third season for the Sci Fi Channel.

The TV nominations are rounded out by the limited run Terminal City with eight, including best drama, and Smallville with six, including best directing for James Marshall.

On the movie side, the Leo noms are led by A Simple Curve. Aubrey Nealon is up for best directing and writing, and his comedy set in the B.C. mountains will face off against Oscar winner Capote, Eve & the Fire Horse, Murder Unveiled and The French Guy for best drama.

Simple Curve is also nom'ed for David Geddes' cinematography, picture editing for Karen Porter, sound editing for Paul Sharpe, production design for Grant Pearse, female lead for Pascale Hutton and male lead for Michael Hogan.

Hogan is up against Chenier Hundal for Murder Unveiled and Brendan Fletcher of Paper Moon Affair, while the female lead noms are rounded out by Eve & the Fire Horse's Phoebe Jojo Kut, The French Guy's Babz Chula, Sarah Strange of Zero Sum and Michelle Harrison for her turn in the MOW Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Mork and Mindy.

The Leo awards will be presented May 12 and 13 in Vancouver.
