Daniel Baldwin stars in the superhero satire Sidekick. The picture by Blake Van de Graaf opened the Canadian Filmmakers Festival in Toronto on March 23 and won its people's choice award three days later.

The comedy Magnus Opus, by Andrew Martin and Gordon Currie, won the award for "best film on a tight budget," while Sorry, Wrong Planet by Playback senior writer Marcus Robinson won best short. Anita Doron's The End of Silence took the prize for best feature. Doron also participated in the fest's screenwriting panel with Michael Mabbott (The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico) and others, while producer Robin Cass, actor Cara Pifko, directors Bruce MacDonald and Warren Sonoda, and Playback editor Mark Dillon took part in a talk on the state of the Canuck film industry.
