Of his many films, the project that Carmody ranks as his proudest achievement is Chicago, which he coproduced. He was brought on the film by repeat employer Miramax, and worked on it for six years, through three different directors and four different screenwriters. Miramax was considering shooting in Toronto, New York or London.
It is obvious which locale Carmody fought for, and he wasn't the only one.
"[Director] Rob Marshall helped swing it, and so did Renée Zellwegger," he explains. "Rob had been up in Toronto doing Kiss of the Spider Woman [on stage], so he knew the local dancers were good and felt comfortable with it. If he'd had his druthers, he would have done it in New York, but Miramax didn't want to spend the money on what they considered an iffy long shot."
Chicago shot in Toronto between December 2001 and March 2002 and ended up winning six Oscars, including the one for best picture, at the 2003 Academy Awards.
