Films exploring Italian politics, post-apartheid South Africa and World War Two will unspool at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, which has revealed another six titles for its Special Presentations slate.
Spike Lee's war drama Miracle at St. Anna, a story about four black American soldiers on the frontlines in Tuscany, starring Derek Luke and John Leguizamo, will have its world premiere at TIFF, alongside Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker, from U.S. director Kathryn Bigelow (K-19: The Widowmaker). Locker stars Ralph Fiennes and Guy Pearce as elite members of an army bomb squad unit.
The South Africa/Australia copro Disgrace, based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel from J.M. Coetzee, about a university professor's fall from grace in post-apartheid South Africa, will also preem at TIFF. It's actor-turned-director Steve Jacobs' second feature film after the comedy drama La Spagnola, and stars John Malkovich.
Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) returns to TIFF, starring in the U.K. drama Good, directed by Vicente Amorim (The Middle of the World), while Juno's Michael Cera headlines the comedy Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, helmed by Peter Sollett.
Paolo Sorrentino's biopic Il Divo, about former Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti and his ties to the Mafia, will have its North American premiere in Toronto after a successful screening at Cannes, where the film nabbed the Jury Prize.
Meanwhile, TIFF organizers this week announced enhanced services being offered by its sales and industry office this year, including a partnership with Cinando -- an online database dedicated to industry professionals.
The database lists companies, films, projects and rights, and will include daily updates. Delegates will also be part of Cinando's industry delegates' social-networking community.
"Our expanded partnership with Cinando will allow for more efficient and productive planning for buyers and sales agents at TIFF'08," commented office director Stefan Wirthensohn in a release.
TIFF runs Sept. 4-13.
