CTV seeks amateur footage
by: May 15, 2008 Print

Look out Lloyd Robertson, CTV has just hired 10 million new reporters. That's assuming every one of the estimated number of Canadians who own video cameras or video-capable phones takes part in a user-generated news site unveiled by the network on Thursday.

The network is calling on the public to submit photos and video at its newly launched mynews.ctv.ca site, and says it may use the images to complement local and national news coverage -- providing a "first-hand perspective on newsworthy events from those on the scene," says Mark Sikstrom, executive producer of ctv.ca.

"News happens anywhere, anytime, and this is the perfect way for Canadians to help us share any breaking news they are witnessing, as it occurs."

The footage is also viewable for free by the public, and by Thursday included recent footage of an apartment fire in Toronto and the aftermath of a helicopter crash in B.C.
